Since low pressure stayed during the week, weather was either cloudy or rainy. However, birding result was generally fruitful. We were lucky to see a flock of Grey Bunting in Aburayama on February 22, a male Copper Pheasant in Miyazaki and a pair of Japanese Murrelet near Hyuga. Highlights of the trip may be Copper Pheasant and Japanese Murrelets. Although the pheasant was only briefly seen, it was really exciting to see the rare subspecies iijimae first time (regarded as near threatened in the Red Data Book). Other notable records were two Siberian White Cranes (adult and immature) and Bluethroat. The two cranes sometimes battled with White-naped Cranes in the feeding ground. The Bluethroat was found along the river bank in Imazu. As I did not hear the news for the latter one, it was surprising to see it.

Date/Time April 20, 2008
Site Name Maioka Park, Yokohama
Weather cloudy
Species Observed 1. Tufted Duck female 1 2. Chinese Bamboo Partridge 3. Oriental Tutle Dove 4. Japanese Green Woodpecker 1 (call) 5. Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker (call) 6. Brown-eared Bulbul 7. Dusky Thrush (call) 8. Brown-headed Thrush 9. Japanese Bush-Warbler 10. Eastern Crowned Warbler 1 (song) 11. Varied Tit (call) 12. Great Tit 13. Japanese White-eye 14. Siberian Meadow Bunting 15. Black-faced Bunting 16. Howfinch 17. Tree Sparrow 18. Grey Starling 19. Large-billed Crow
Comments May be due to strong wind, there was little call of birds despite the peak migratory season. A first arrival of Eastern Crowned Warbler and a fairly large number of Brown-headed Thrush only reminded me spring. A female Tufted Duck has been still there.
