Comments Due to Hari Raya holiday, although we predicted hundreds of people in the Park H.Q., somehow, the number of people is even less than normal weekend. Our birding today was started from a soaring Black Eagle, followed by a nice view of male Snowy-browed Flycatcher. An adult Oriental Cuckoo was fantastic view for more than five minutes. A highlight of the day is doubtlessly a pair of Whitehead's Trogon. After we flushed a female (photo below), it had sat down in a same branch for over 10 minutes while a male briefly but well showed the bright scarlet body in the leaves.

Comments @Due to heavy rain last night, trails in the park was very muddy. Despite the bad condition, we enjoyed nice view of Short-tailed Green Magpie, male Black-and-Crimson Oriole, two male Snowy-browed Flycatchers, an Eye-browed Jungle Flycatcher and one Mountain Wren-Babbler. I always wonder why they turn up suddenly after several months' silence. It was first time for us to see Short-tailed Green Magpie after I saw on January 2002! A highlight of the day was a very tame Mountain Wren-Babbler. We were happy to see the tiny dumpy bird within a few metres for five minutes.

Comments @Comparing to the April's visit, we saw less species and number of birds. It is interesting that we saw no Black-naped Monarch, which was numerous last time. Luckily, we still saw two pairs of Rhinoceros, some Black, three Helmeted, a pair of Oriental Pied Hornbills. Jerdon's Baza seems to be regularly seen here. We saw one for each day. Two species of fish-eagles are highlights of the trip. Lesser Fish-Eagle seems to be more common than Grey-headed while the tour guide was only familiar with the Lesser.
@Other than birds, a Flat-headed Cat was probably the best. It was seen during the night cruise.
@Although we were not satisfied with services provided by Sukau Rainforest Lodge, their attraction, namely night cruise, is highly recommendable while we were able to see Stork-billed Kingfishers, Blue-eared Kingfishers and four Black-and-Red Broadbill in the very close distance.

Comments @Finally, I saw a male Whitehead's Trogon! The male was seen at Silau-Silau Trail along a stream. It was seen approx. five minutes within 10-15 metres. It often flicked the tail which is not usually seen in other trogons. The other bonus was three of Crimson-headed Partridges. We encountered them at Kiau View Trail. Although we saw them only less than one minute, it flew down on the trail approx. 5 metre from us!

Comments @Another cool morning. We found generally cool morning is more productive. Highlights of the day are Green Broadbill and Yellow-rumped Flowerpecker. Green Broadbill was found along the path near the entrance together with two Black-and-Red Broadbill! The emerald green was so distinctive in the jungle. An endemic flowerpecker, Yellow-rumped Flowerpecker is less distinctive. It is so similar to the relative, Crimson-breasted Flowerpecker but has very clear yellow rump. Other birds we enjoyed are, juvenile Banded Broadbill, juvenile White-rumped Shama with so many adults and a Puff-backed Bulbul. A pair of Banded Pitta was seen from the canopy walk only very briefly. A bonus was a baby civet, which was found by the other tourilsts. It was less than ten centimetre and likely still cannot see yet. I wonder why the baby civet was left on the trail and strongly hoped it is able to survive.

Comments @Because of rain in the last night, it was cool morning. Since many trees are full of fruits, we enjoyed more birds than usual. Particularly, we were excited with a Golden-naped Barbet was sitting nearly eye level about five metre from us. Sunda Whistling-Thrush was another highlight of the day since we were able to see so closely.

Comments Because of the heavy rain, we were obliged to stop birding after 10:00 a.m.. It was first time for me to visit Inobong. Since trees around the area are still not matured, it would be difficult to expect purely forested species. However, it would be a good spot for observing barbets, leafbirds and minivets since panoramic view helps scoping birds on the canopy.

They seem to be common there.

Comments Because of so many tourists, park HQ was too noisy and busy for birding. Apparently, some species, such as Short-tailed Green Magpie and Sunda (Grey and Brown) Laughingthrush, which used to be common, are less easier to observe.
At Porling, we had a very nice view of a male White-tailed Flycatcher. The blue flycatcher's short tail and heavy bill is good identification points from similar Indigo, Pale Blue and Blue-and-White Flycatchers.

Comments Although we simply participated in an arranged tour by the Wildlife Expeditions, we enjoyed birding very much during the tour. Some interesting birds were as below.
1. Storm's Stork: It seems farely common along the Kinabatangan River. We saw three on April 10.
2. Jerdon's Baza: We luckily saw one this reratively uncommon raptor on April 10.
3. Mountain Serpent Eagle: It was perching on a tree along the road to the Gomantong Cave. Although we firstly thought it should be Crested Serpent Eagle, because of distinctive white bar on the tail, darker lower parts and much larger size, we finally identified as Mountain Serpent Eagle.
4. Black-and-Yellow Broadbill: Quite common around the area.
5. Blue-winged Pitta: We had a very good view at the night walk. It was sleeping on an exposed branch about five meter hight from the ground. A very nice full view was probably one of the highlights of the trip.
6. Stirped Wren-Babbler: A poor little bird was disturbed by our lights during the night walk. It was sitting on a grass about one meter hight! So, all of us had a very nice view.
7. Malaysian Blue Flycatcher: This relatively shy flycatcher seems to be common along a stream at Sukau. We saw one male on the log but heard more calls.
